A clone hunter starts recovering memories of a life he never lived — a dystopian sci-fi short, and the first AI film made with an approved SAG-AFTRA cast.
Directed by Kavan Cardoza ("Kavan the Kid") in partnership with Arcana Labs and his own studio Phantom X, with Arcana co-founder Jonathan Yunger as executive producer. Arcana AI's proprietary engine scanned and re-rendered the likenesses, voices, and movements of real, unionized SAG-AFTRA actors — Breckin Meyer, Taylor John Smith, Danielle Bisutti, and Gedeon Burkhard — preserving their performances while replacing the final image with AI generation. A three-person team used a hybrid workflow, combining traditional performance capture with the generative platforms Arcana and Runway. Composer Miguel Johnson contributed an AI-enhanced score. The film premiered at AI on the Lot in May 2025 and racked up several hundred thousand views within its first month. Getting SAG-AFTRA sign-off required detailed documentation and performer protections — a precedent set in the aftermath of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike against unauthorized AI replication of performers, which other studios can now reference.
What makes this one matter isn't just the SAG-AFTRA sign-off, it's that the performances still read as real acting. Arcana's re-rendering is impressively faithful to the original takes.
A clean, tense sci-fi short that would work even without the "first of its kind" framing. The pacing dips a little in the middle act, but the ending lands.
