An essay film that asks how many possible digital images — real or fictional — could ever exist, and uses the math of combinatorics to find out.
Grand Prix winner at Runway's third annual AI Film Festival (AIFF 2025), held June 5, 2025 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall in New York and judged by Gaspar Noé, Harmony Korine, and Jane Rosenthal from more than 6,000 submissions. Over 9 minutes and 28 seconds, filmmaker and musician Jacob Adler uses generative AI imagery and a chain of combinatorial math to argue that “Total Pixel Space” — every digital image that could ever exist — is a number so large it dwarfs the observable universe, illustrated by a stream of images ranging from the mundane to the reality-bending.
